Students in the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences (CSAHS) don’t wait until they graduate to put the University motto “Improve Life” into action. They are encouraged from day one to make a difference in their school, community and around the world. Courses are designed around this concept, faculty lead by example and resources are used to support students in making a difference.

On Tuesday, November 5th of 2019, an unveiling of a memorial bench was attended by family and colleagues of the late University of Guelph psychology department chair, Dr. Harry Hurwitz. The memorial bench was donated by the Hurwitz family, and long-time friend and colleagues, Dr. Hank Davis and Dr. Andrew Winston.
The class of MAC 1967 celebrated a reunion in Canmore, Alberta, September 23 - 27, 2019. Classmates from all across Canada, and even one who journeyed from England, came together to enjoy reconnecting and experiencing the beauty of the area around Canmore and Banff.
Highlights of the four-day reunion were an all-day coach trip through Kananaskis Country and a tour of the Bar U Ranch National Historic Site, as well as a western wind-up dinner and dance at the Mount View Barbeque venue in Banff.
“The whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” is an axiom oft’ attributed to Aristotle, one of the greatest teachers in history. The College of Social and Applied Human Science’s Hub for Teaching and learning Excellence, established in 2018, is an embodiment of this notion.
Two new and innovative graduate programs have been unveiled recently by the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences – a PhD in Social Practice and Transformational Change and a Master in Conservation Leadership. These leading-edge programs are unique in the Canadian academic landscape – both in their composition and program design.
In 1914, International Women’s Day was held on March 8th for the first time. Since then, the world has come a long way in recognizing the need for equality – not just for women but for all people. Despite the progress that’s been made, the fight is far from over. This year during International Women’s Day, the theme Balance for Better asks us to both celebrate women’s achievements and continue to challenge bias.
At the 20th anniversary celebration of the University of Guelph, Centre for Families Work and Well-being held last night, it was announced that the Centre would be taking on a new name and a new strategic direction.
The Centre – which was first founded in 1998 and focuses on researching and promoting family and individual well-being, responsive workplaces and sustainable communities – will be renamed as the Live Work Well Research Centre.
Emily De Sousa, a fourth-year Environmental Governance student was the recipient of three scholarship awards at last week’s College of Social and Applied Human Sciences award ceremony.
De Sousa is the first person in her family to attend University. During her high-school years, she didn’t think that attending University would be a possibility due to family financial reasons, but her parents’ determination to see her succeed and their considerable sacrifices made it happen.
