This Pride Month join the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences in amplifying and celebrating research on pressing issues facing LGBTQ2IA+ communities. Join us for a conversation with Caleb Harwood, University of Guelph's Gender and Sexual Diversity Advisor, and Abigail Mitchell, Sociology PhD student as they discuss LGBTQ2IA+ inclusion in academia and beyond. As a college, we are committed to creating spaces that affirm our unique identities, foster inclusive excellence and working towards removing barriers to LGBTQ2IA+ inclusion so that we all can experience a true sense of belonging.

Speakers
Caleb Harwood (he/they/she) is the Sexual and Gender Diversity Advisor at the University of Guelph. Some of their main responsibilities are to support and advocate for LGBTQ2IA+ students navigating identity and/or bumping up against cisheteronormativity within any facet of life. They have an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Drama Studies from the University of Toronto at Mississauga, a Bachelor of Applied Science in Adult Development from the University of Guelph, and a Conservatory Diploma from Sheridan College. Caleb shares that as a queer individual, they understand the importance that the spaces offering equitable support to LGBTQ2IA+ students must grasp the nuances, uniqueness, and individuality of queer identity. Caleb also has a commitment that the supports within the Sexual and Gender Diversity Team are mindful of bias and continue to unlearn and relearn how we can better support identities that may intersect with queerness.
Abigail Mitchell (she/her) is a Sociology PhD student at the University of Guelph. She completed her MA in Guelph's Criminology and Criminal Justice Policy program, and her BSc in Forensic Science at Laurentian University. Abigail works as a Graduate Research Assistant at the Centre for the Study of Social and Legal Responses to Violence (CSSLRV), researching sexual femicide, domestic homicide, and internet-facilitated child sexual abuse. She is a graduate student representative on the U of G Research Ethics Board and the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Advisory Committee for Students. As a woman in the LGBTQ2IA+ community, Abigail is devoted to advancing research on gender-based and sexual violence, amplifying marginalized voices, and promoting social justice initiatives.
