Applying to Graduate School in Psychology Panel

The Psychology Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Task Force at the University of Guelph is hosting a recruitment event targeted toward students from under-represented communities, including 1st-generation and racialized students who are considering applying to graduate school in psychology (for eligibility, see below). Our goal is to help prepare prospective graduate students for the application process and life as a graduate student.     

Who is eligible?

The University of Guelph is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion within our organization and within Canada more broadly. We recognize that certain groups are underrepresented in advanced degree programs, including racialized and 1st-generation students. These individuals may have access to less information about graduate school than their colleagues from more advantaged backgrounds through family members, social circles, etc. We encourage all students who feel they could benefit from this event to attend. Students and recent graduates from all universities, whether Canadian or international, are welcome to register.

How to Register:

Registration is FREE. Spaces are limited so please register down below. You will be asked to complete a short survey to help us prepare the panelists for your questions and to gather some demographic information. Following registration, we will send you the link to our Zoom event via email the day of the event.

Your contact information will only be used to communicate with you about the event. After the event, answers to questions in the registration form will be stored separately from your personal details and only used to improve our event programming. 

Itinerary

2:00 - 2:10 pm: Introduction/opening remarks

2:10 - 3:45 pm: Panel sessions & moderated question period

Our panel session features three scholars who will share their personal experiences of graduate school: the application process, the training they received, the challenges and opportunities they’ve encountered, and their current or future career paths. Following each presentation, we will open the floor to questions from the audience for 10 minutes. Participants will be asked to send questions to our identified moderator using the chat function, or use your "raise hand" function on Zoom.

3:45 - 4:00 pm: Break

4:00 - 4:45 pm: Workshops 
Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in one of two workshops focusing on different components of the application: 1) Writing a statement of interest or 2) Structuring your CV/Scholarship Applications. 

4:45 - 5:25 pm: University of Guelph psychology area specific networking sessions 
Participants can self-select the specific area of psychology they are interested in at the University of Guelph.
Each session is supported by current graduate students from the following areas:
Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology
Industrial Organizational Psychology
Applied Social Psychology
Neuroscience and Applied Cognitive Science
