Join guest speakers for an interactive session aiming to enhance course delivery, and walk away with practical tools to strengthen online and hybrid teaching.
With the growth of our incoming cohort in the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences (CSAHS), faculty and sessional instructors are adapting to deliver high-quality, accessible, and engaging online learning experiences that foster a positive learning environment for students. In this interactive virtual session, David Stanley and Victoria Chen will share evidence-informed best practices for online teaching tailored to the CSAHS context. Drawing on their experience and current pedagogical research, the session will focus on strategies to enhance student engagement, promote equity through flexible and inclusive design, and manage the complexities of large-scale course delivery. Participants will leave with practical tools and scalable approaches that can be applied to enhance learning outcomes and improve student satisfaction in our evolving online environments..
Guest speaker David Stanley
David J. Stanley is an Associate Professor in the Industrial-Organizational Psychology area at the University of Guelph. He obtained his PhD from The University of Western Ontario. David has published articles in such journals as Advances in Methods and Practices in Psychological Science, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Research Methods, and Perspectives in Psychological Science. When teaching moved online in 2020 David spent countless hours investigating approaches to online delivery. He was particularly interested in finding ways to increase student engagement via the technology used by the online gaming community on Twitch and YouTube. David has taught numerous online-synchronous classes using Zoom and will share his approach engaging students in an online environment. Those attending this talk we learn how create a home studio and be introduced to technology useful for increasing student engagement.
Guest speaker Victoria Chen
Dr. Victoria Chen is an Academic Technology Specialist at the University of Guelph-Humber. She played a key role in supporting the shift to remote delivery during the pandemic and later led the transition to HyFlex learning in return to campus. Her work focuses on leveraging the institution’s learning management system to enhance course design, promote active learning, and enrich the overall student experience. She is passionate about empowering educators to use technology including artificial intelligence in ways that foster inclusive, accessible, and engaging learning environments.
