Turning up the heat on sexuality research

An innovative lab at the U of G is providing a non-invasive, cost-effective method for clinically measuring sexual responses.

Researchers at the Psychophysiology of Sexual Health (POSH) lab are using thermal imaging technology to bring a unique perspective to physical sexual response and its effect on overall quality of life.

Prof. Tuuli Kukkonen of the Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition, the director of the POSH lab, says that she specifically designed the lab to examine issues surrounding the measurement of physical sexual arousal.

When Guelph sex-researcher and media-celebrity sexologist Robin Milhausen was coming of age in Collingwood, it was her father who delivered the birds and bees talk to her. Perhaps foreshadowing the arresting candour his child would come to develop for talking publicly about sexuality and relationships, Ford Milhausen served it up matter-of-factly. “He said: ‘Every guy is going to want to have sex with you. You’re going to have to pick the right one. Or ones,’ ” Milhausen recalls.

Starting this summer, psychology PhD students Grace Ewles and Rebecca Lee will interview female professionals to find out how they navigate their romantic relationships to support their career goals.

Although work-life balance has been the subject of many studies, the researchers found a void in the literature.
