Professor Emeritus Neil J. MacKinnon will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement award at this year’s American Sociological Association annual meeting.

Dr. MacKinnon began his teaching career at the University of Guelph in 1972 in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. During his tenure, he helped advance the study of emotions, identity, and institutions and saw his work as an “intersection of psychology and sociology.”

Dr. MacKinnon wrote extensively, including three books titled Self, Identity, and Social Institutions (co-written with David Heise), Self-Esteem and Beyond, and Symbolic Interactionism as Affect Control.

Chair of the Lifetime Achievement award selection committee Linda Francis says, “the depth and breadth of [Dr. MacKinnon’s] publications, the advances in both theory and methodology he has made, his clear contribution to the field of Emotions, and his mentoring and support of junior emotions scholars,” is why he was chosen.

The award will be presented on Sunday, August 12, 2018, during the Section on Sociology of Emotions, Sociology of Emotions Chair’s Hour, held at the Pennsylvania Convention Centre, 104A, Level 100, at 10:30 am.
