CBC interviews SOAN Prof about new research centre focused on women, girls killed in Canada

Submitted by ksnook on November 28, 2017 - 11:46am

Dr. Myrna DawsonSOAN Professor, Director of the Centre for the Study of Social and Legal Responses to Violence and head of the Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability, Dr. Myrna Dawson, is leading a new research centre at the U of G, which is drawing attention to the number of Canadian women and girls who are killed on a regular basis. According to Dr. Dawson, a stagering one woman or girl is killed every other day. The new research centre, which will open on December 6, will track and conduct research on the number of women killed accross Canada.

It's hard to speak about this in every day language - how women are seen as property and when they try to exit a relationship that's not seen as appropriate, it stems from misogynistic attitudes about what it means to be a woman, whither she can be independent in choosing her relationships.

Another goal of the centre will be to track femicide trends accross the country. Dr. Dawson will be the first to track all femicides in Canada.  Previously, different groups in different parts of Canada kept seperate tallies.
