FASD Study: Prevalence in Corrections

Submitted by ksnook on November 27, 2017 - 3:48pm

Kaitlyn McLachlanPsychology Professor, Dr. Kaitylyn McLachlan, has been leading a study that looks at the prevalence of individuals with FASD in correctional institutions, specifically in the Yukon. The information gathered in the study will help determine how we offer services at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre and in the surrounding community.

Here are some interesting findings:

  • 60% of adolescents and adults with FASD have been in trouble with the law;
  • Adolescents with FASD are 19x more likely to be incarcerated compared to youth without FASD;
  • 94% of individuals sampled have measurable cognitive deficits;
  • >90% are high risk for problems related to mental health and addictions.
