Dr. Paula Barata, an esteemed researcher and educator within the College of Social and Applied Human Science brings a wealth of experience to her new role as Associate Dean, Academic (ADA). With a PhD in Applied Social Psychology from the University of Windsor, her journey in academia has already been marked by significant contributions within the college, including her tenure as Acting ADA during the challenges of COVID-19 and her current role as Interim ADA since September 2023.
Barata's commitment to the college is evident in her efforts in program development, curriculum reform, and enriching the student experience, making her an indispensable member of our academic community. Beyond her administrative duties, Barata continues to excel as a professor and Academic Advisor in the Department of Psychology, where she inspires students to achieve their scholarly potential.
"My students not only contribute immensely to my research but also drive my passion for making a meaningful impact on society and shaping the future through their potential."
– Dr. Paula Barata
Barata's research has a distinct feminist perspective, focusing extensively on violence against women with a practical orientation. Her work includes evaluating programs such as Enhanced Access, Acknowledge, Act (EAAA), a sexual assault resistance education initiative, and engaging in community-based projects that explore the experiences of intimate partner violence survivors. Recently, she secured a SSHRC Partnership Development grant aimed at gathering longitudinal data on homelessness and housing instability among survivors in Canada, bridging together the violence against women and homelessness sectors.
Barata’s commitment to the scholarship of teaching and learning and, more specifically, innovation in education and programming, make her an excellent fit for this position. Our students, staff, and faculty have already benefitted from her dedication, rational thought and calm demeanor while taking on hard decision and advocacy work throughout her time in the Deans Office.
"Dr. Barata has not only been a leader for the college over the years but one of my most valuable and welcomed allies from when I started at the University of Guelph last year. Both my Associate Deans draw on a collective strength and expertise to ensure we offer our students an outstanding learning experience, continue to produce world-class community-engaged and applied scholarship, and consistently build on our progress towards a more inclusive and welcoming college."
– Dr. Uwa Idemudia, Dean, College of Social and Applied Human Sciences
Reflecting on her new role, Barata expresses enthusiasm for this unique opportunity to continue her work with graduate students and advancing her research while being a part of an administration that is dedicated to transformative positive leadership. Her goals for her term include promoting consultative and transparent administration, innovating pedagogical approaches, fostering international collaborations, and ensuring prudent resource management and fiscal responsibility across the college.
