Care Activism: Migrant Domestic Workers and the Fight for Social Justice in Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Philippines

"The forms of activism that migrant domestic workers engage in are distinct from other social justice movements in that their efforts are fundamentally rooted in notions of caring citizenship, which in itself is grounded in an ethos of care and solidarity."
 - Dr. Ethel Tungohan

In my talk, I discuss the concept of ‘care activism’ among migrant domestic worker activists. Based on research I undertook from 2009 until 2020 for my book, “Care Activism: Migrant Domestic Workers, Movement-Building and Communities of Care,” I argue that, far from being ‘objects’ of labour migration policies, migrant domestic workers resist harmful structures, norms and policies through their activism.
